Bursary Programmes Offered By AAUW In 2020 for Women who Want to Continue Their Postgraduate Studies and Have Commitment to Give Back to the South African Community
The American Association of University Women (or abbreviated “AAUW” as noted in this article)’s histories in being the nation’s catalyst of equity and education promotion to women and girls can be tracked back to the 1881 year, when it held its first meeting.
Until now, AAUW doesn’t merely stop in examining and taking stands of daily fundamental issues, such as educational, social, economic, or political. Rather, it has spread its wings until it now has more than 170,000 members and supporters in the U.S., 1,000 local branches, and more than 800 university and college partners. These entire milestones enable AAUW to hold more educationally enriching programmes, such as the bursary programme as described in this article.
AAUW’s Bursary Programme’s Schemes and Requirements
The AAUW organisation has disbursed bursary funds to non-U.S. citizens or Permanent Resident women since its inception in 1917. AAUW’s bursary programme scheme’s extended name is known as AAUW’s International Fellowship, which is originally targeted at Latin American women.
Today, AAUW’s International Fellowship Alumni Networks have extended all over the world. Until now, there have been more than 3,400 funded women in its 140 of supported countries, including in South Africa.
Basically, this AAUW’s International Fellowship bursary programme funds every woman who aspire to study in any Postgraduate or Professional-related degrees in U.S.’ accredited institutions and ready to give back to and be academic, business, government, community activism, arts, and sciences leaders for their home countries’ community.
In some cases, however, AAUW offers bursary funds to help its fellows to fund studies outside the U.S. region. There are also cases where AAUW rewards bursaries to women members of the Graduate Women International or GWI.
Since the International Fellowships have up to 5 limits for Master or Professional degree students, this renewable bursary programme of AAUW has its distinct set of criteria that should be met by the entire interested applicants as noted on lists below:
- Have U.S. Bachelor or equivalent degree by the end of September every year.
- Have a Letter of Acceptance from their targeted study programme in their chosen U.S. institutions.
- Achieve great marks in academic matters.
- Intend to return to their countries (in this case, South Africa) to advance fellow women’s contributions through civic, community, or professional works.
