About Mintek Bursaries 2020-2021
Mintek has a lot going on these days. Besides constantly developing the company itself, Mintek is also on the search for potential graduates who display exemplary skills as well as a strong interest in the South African metallurgy industry. In order to seek out for these ground-breaking graduates, the company has initiated the Mintek Undergraduate and Postgraduate Bursary Programmes. Through this effort, the company is able to seek out young individuals who are talented and skilled enough to become a part of the Mintek working staff. Not only are they just looking for people who are smart enough, but they are also searching for people who are willing to push themselves within the research and development departments.

By offering the Mintek Bursary programme, the company is able to shape future employees from the very moment they are still attaining their education in university. That way, students will not have to feel pressured about having to quickly adapt themselves to the Mintek work culture after graduation. Since they are groomed from the 1st year of their university studies, by the time they are set to apply for a job in Mintek, they will already be come prepared with the necessary skills set. Hopefully, by conducting this programme, the future of South Africa’s minerals and metallurgy sector is bound to shine even brighter, just like all the gold, silver, and other precious minerals that they have dug out.

Study Fields
The Mintek Bursary programme is only applicable to a certain list of study areas that are in line with the company’s vision and missions, as well as their ways of business. In general, the bursaries are only given out to undergraduate, honors, or B.Tech diploma students. Unfortunately, the programme does not have openings for first year National Diploma students. In addition, the bursary only caters to these specializations listed below:

  • Chemistry (Analytical or Geochemistry)
  • Chemical Engineering (Minerals Processing option)
  • Electrical Engineering (Process Control Systems or Electronics)
  • Geology (majoring in Mineralogy, Petrology, Applied Geology or Economic Geology)
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Physical Metallurgy/Materials Science
  • Physics

Program Value
Successful candidates of the Mintek Bursary programme will be entitled to plentiful financial benefits that will ensure that these students have a much easier time pursuing the degrees their choice. These benefits include fully-paid university registration and tuition fees, stipends for accommodation and meals, as well as an allowance of R15,000 given on a yearly basis. In addition, once the awardees have graduated from their respective studies, they will also be required to join a training program that will help these students further develop their skills as dignified scientists and engineers.

Key Responsibilities
Once a candidate has been chosen as a Mintek Bursary programme recipient, there are key responsibilities that these grantees must take on besides maintaining an above average academic track record in university. Upon completion of their university studies, this bursary grantees must allocate the amount of years their bursary took place to work for the Mintek company post-graduation. This is different from the vacation work that they will have to undergo through during their university years (which will be explained even further below.)

Vacation Work
The Mintek Bursary programme will also ask for all if its selected candidates to participate in an obligatory vacation work program that is mandatory for all 1st-3rd year university students. Throughout the course of more or less 8 weeks during their vacation period, these recipients will undergo through a programme that will expose them to the real-life working field of Mintek, which heavily revolves around research development, as well as the technology industry. This is also a great opportunity for recipients to prove themselves as not just students who are worthy of bursaries, but they also have the potential to become future employees of the Mintek company. By being assigned to different divisions in the company, and also given the vast responsibilities of handling high-level projects, this is definitely a chance for the lucky bursary grantees to shine.

Mintek Bursary Requirements
The Mintek Bursary programme will be assessing all incoming candidates based on a list of standards that the committee has created themselves. This is to ensure that the participants all come in on the same level of potential, hence ensuring the fairness of the application procedure itself. While not being able to meet all of the requirements may not get you instantly booted of the application process, it may lower your chances of getting accepted by the programme.

The Mintek Bursary Requirements are:

  • All candidates are obliged to hold an official South African citizenship
  • Has enrolled into recognized universities in South Africa
  • Has enrolled for a full-time university degree
  • If you are a university student at the moment: must attain an average score of 60% for all of the subjects that the candidates is currently taking.

How to Apply Mintek Bursary 2020-2021
Have what it takes to earn a Mintek Bursary? Then what are you waiting for? It’s time to start your applications! To sign up for the programme, candidates will be required to check whether the bursary programme is available or not through the Mintek Application Page. Once you have found out that the bursary programme is currently available, you may proceed to download the official Mintek Application Form. Fill in the form with only accurate personal information about yourselves. Participants found to be falsifying their personal details will be immediately disqualified from the application procedure.

In addition to filling out your application forms, candidates will also be asked to submit in several important documents to support their applications. The required documents for the application are:

  • A valid copy of the candidate’s identification (e.g. ID Card or legitimate passport)
  • Valid copies of the candidate’s Matric examination ceritifcates
  • Valid copies of the candidate’s academic transcripts
  • Proof of registration into a tertiary institution
  • Any other qualifying certificates
  • Your latest and most recently updated Curriculum Vitae.

Important Information

  • All candidates are obligated to send in fully-completed applications dossiers. If anyone is to be found sending in their applications late, they will not be acknowledged by the committee
  • Only shortlisted applicants will be notified if they have passed the administrative round
  • If you have yet to hear from the committee withing 3 months past the deadline, we regret to inform you that your application has not been successful
