SARAO (South African Radio Astronomy Observatory) Profile
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, commonly shortened to as SARAO, has been a promising establishment founded under the National Research Foundation. The purpose behind SARAO’s development is to start on a series of programmes that are relevant to the area of radio astronomy, especially on South African grounds. Some of the efforts that have been conducted by SARAO includes the Geodesy, the MeerKAT Radio Telescope, and the HartRAO facility. Furthermore, SARAO is the team that is responsible for managing and supervising the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (AVN), as well as the construction of the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope. To fully implement the potential that South Africa holds for this specific field, SARAO is continuously conducting programmes as a means to increase the quality of technology in radio astronomy science and research.
In addition, the Square Kilometre Array, oftentimes referred to as simply SKA, is another programme that is conducted as a means to create what is considered to be the globe’s largest radio telescope in size, with a massive collecting area of approximate one million square meters. This telescope will be especially made and located in the continents of Australia, and of course, Africa. Compared to the famous Hubble Space Telescope, SKA will have an image resolution quality that is 50 times clearer than Hubble. By utilizing the available resources they have, and making use of the geographical factors around them, this project is considered to be the most groundbreaking initiative to date.
About SARAO (South African Radio Astronomy Observatory) Bursaries 2020
The South African SKA Project’s Grant is currently offering bursaries for four well-deserving undergraduate students who are pursuing their degrees in accredited universities. On top of providing generous financial assistance, selected awardees of the bursary will be entitled to outreach and support as well. Eligible students who can apply for this bursary programme are National Diploma, Undergraduate, and Honours students.
SARAO (South African Radio Astronomy Observatory) Bursary Requirements
The SARAO Bursary is mainly allocated for students who have display outstanding academic results and are pursuing certain educational qualifications. In general, all incoming candidates must be officially recognized as a citizen of South Africa only. Furthermore, depending on what educational qualification you are chasing for at the moment, there are different requirements applied to it as well. - National Diploma in Electronics, at the Theory Level
- Mechanical Engineering, at the Work Integrated Learning Level
- National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, at the Theory Level.
Undergraduate
- Plans on pursuing an educational qualification in any of these mentioned courses below:
- Bachelor of Science in Astronomy / Astrophysics and Physics
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics AND Physics
- Bachelor of Electronic Engineering
- Bachelor of Science – Honours – Physics and Electronics / Astrophysics / Astronomy / Computer Science
- Bachelor of Computer Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics

Honours
- Has attained at least a score of 70% for the key subjects of Grade 12 Mathematics, Physical Science, or at least an average aggregate of 60% for the undergraduate level studies
