MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) Profile
The Mining Qualifications authority, or simply referred to as MQA, is an establishment that is founded directly under the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA). SETA is a well-known establishment that aims to promote the skills development of young individuals. In this case, the MQA is responsible for South Africa’s Mining and Minerals sector. Based on the Mine Health and Safety Act No.29 of 1996, MQA is finalized as a proper SETA under the Skills Development Act No.97 of 1998.

About MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) Bursaries 2020-2021
The Mining Qualifications Authority Bursaries is a programme that is offered to  South African students who are keen on the local Mining and Minerals sector. This bursary is mainly offered to support young individuals to pursue their future careers at Higher Education and Training (HET). If you are currently admitted into any accredited tertiary institution (including TVET Colleges or Universities of Technology), you are more than welcome to give this opportunity a shot.

Selected bursars will be awarded with a generous sum of financial funding that helps provide coverage for several expenses, such as registration fees, accommodation costs, allowances for meals, prescribed study materials, and an allowance that is given each semester. This opportunity also allows bursars to partake in a future career that is considered in the scarce and critical skills list.

The MQA Bursaries are provided towards students who are pursuing any of these qualifications below:

  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current only)
  • Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Engineering
  • Rock Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Environmental Health and Management
  • Fitting including Machinery
  • Boilermaking
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Jewellery Design and Manufacturing
  • Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive only)
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Rigger Ropesman
  • Mining Survey
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Geology
  • Millwright
  • Diesel Mechanic
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Instrumentation Mechanician
  • Chemical Engineering (Mineral Processing)
  • Electrician
  • Any BTech Qualification associated with the discipline / course listed above.

MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) Bursary Requirements
The MQA Bursary is only available to a select number of students who are in line with the vision and mission of the sector. In order to filter out students who truly deserve this opportunity, all applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria that has been standardized by the committee beforehand. To ensure success with your applications, it is highly advisable that all applicants have these items paid attention to.

The MQA Bursary Requirements are as follows:

  • Candidates must be officially recognized as a citizen of South Africa
  • Currently thirty-five (35) years old or below
  • Display solid academic potential and the need for financial aid
  • Possess a strong interest in the Mining and Minerals sector
  • Selected bursars have the option to renew their bursaries on a yearly basis, provided they are able to maintain their academic scores (this will be re-evaluated by the MQA Bursary Committee)
  • Preference will be offered to applicants who are females, people  who have disabilities, people who are originating from rural backgrounds, or are currently enrolled in any of their local tertiary institutions
  • Due to the overwhelming demand of this bursary, only selected awardees will be announced directly by the committee
  • The MQA holds all rights to award or withdraw a candidate’s bursary
  • Selected awardees must partake in the bursary’s contractual agreement directly with the MQA
  • Selected awardees must not be involved with another external bursary
  • The MQA Bursary is not available for students who are continuing their post-graduate studies
  • Candidates must be partaking in any of the MQA-approved specializations that have been mentioned above.

How to Apply MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) Bursary 2020-2021
To Apply for the MQA Bursary, all candidates must first download either the Official Application Form for Employees in the Mining and Minerals Sector, or the Bursary Continuation Application Form. Also, if you would like to check who is approved for the funding, you can simply refer to the Provisionally Approved Unemployed Bursars for Funding. Once you have the application form in your hands, please pay attention to all of the instructions that have been stated clearly on the documents. All applicants must have all of these noted before they are to fill it in or submit in their applications. Not following the provided instructions may result in you getting disqualified from the entire application procedure.

Before you fill in the application forms, take not of these instructions below:

  • Complete the entire application form using only BLOCK letters – application dossiers that have missing information or documents will not be acknowledged
  • All application dossiers must include all the documents that are asked of by the committee
  • All application dossiers must be submitted to any of the provided addresses that have been stated below
  • Announcements will only be made to successful awardees of the bursary programme.

Important documents that will need to be attached:

  • A valid copy of the candidate’s Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
  • For university/university of technology students: a complete academic transcript with the with official letterhead/stamp of your respective institutions
  • For first-year students: a valid letter of acceptance from your respective tertiary institutions
  • A valid copy of your South African ID (must not exceed three months)
  • A valid letter of consent issued by your employer that allows you to partake in the MQA Bursary programme (must include company letterhead and contains the signature of your supervisor.)

Important Notes

  • Due to the overwhelming demand of this bursary, only selected awardees will be announced directly by the committee
  • Preference will be offered to applicants who are females, people  who have disabilities, people who are originating from rural backgrounds, or are currently enrolled in any of their local tertiary institutions
  • Selected awardees of the MQA Bursary will be obliged to partake in employment in the South African Mining and Minerals Sectors with the duration of the years that they have been given the bursary
  • Any application dossiers that are sent by fax or e-mail will not be acknowledged
  • Likewise, any application dossiers sent past the closing date will not be acknowledged as well
  • Announcements will be made within two (2) months of the deadline – if you have not heard back from the committee by then, we regret to inform you that you have not passed the applications
