The Industrial Development Corporation is an establishment that was founded in 1940 with the purpose to promote the national development of the country’s finance sector. In order to achieve this, IDC as an institution pays great attention to fulfilling certain goals, which includes maintaining sustainable economic growth in the continent of Africa, encouraging the importance of economic empowerment amongst the people of South Africa, and reaching overall economic prosperity that flourishes in the country. With the assistance and supervision directly under the Department of Trade Industry & Competition, IDC is on its way to completing their vision and missions, paving the way for new ambitions and goals for the future.

About IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) Bursaries 2020-2021
The Industrial Development Corporation is offering bursary programmes towards students who require financial assistance in order to pursue their university education. The IDC Bursaries is a great opportunity for academically talented students who are able to display wondrous potential in their studies. The fully-funded bursary will be offered to students who are partaking any of these degree courses below:

    • Mining (University of technology level leading to B. Tech)

Students who are not enrolled in any either of the study courses mentioned above will not be eligible for the IDC Bursaries.

The IDC Bursary will help provide coverage for full-time undergraduate/diploma students, which includes:

  • The bursary will directly transfer the financial assistance to the university for the awardee’s tuition expenses and on-campus accommodation
  • Coverage for prescribed study materials, paid directly towards the service provider with proper documentation of quotation
  • Awardees staying in any university-approved residence will have their financial assistance directly transferred towards the Landlord, provided they are able to obtain a lease agreement between the two parties (must be approved)
  • Allowance for daily meals (self-catering resident) will be given on a quarterly period
  • A working laptop.

IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) Bursary Requirements
The IDC Bursary is available towards students who are able to meet the qualifications that have been standardized by this programme. Each of these items below will play a crucial role in determining whether you are eligible enough for the financial assistance provided by this bursary. Therefore, in order to ensure success, it is highly advisable that you take all of these requirements into consideration:

The IDC Bursary Requirements are as follows:

  • Must be an official citizen of South Africa who owns a valid Identity Document number and is currently residing in South Africa
  • Is eligible enough to enroll in a University, TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training), or University of Technology
  • Currently not attached to any other external bursary programme
  • Is currently 16 years old but not above 25 years old
  • Educational Qualifications:
    • Matric Students: able to maintain a total average aggregate of 75% or more
    • Tertiary Students: able to maintain a total average aggregate of 65% or more
  • Students who are already enrolled in University or University of Technology and have finished at least one year of their studies will be evaluated based on their Grade 12 results, as well as their most recent academic transcripts
  • If you are currently pursuing a degree in which you have applied the bursary for, you must make sure that you have never failed any of the subjects during your study period
  • Only full-time students studying a valid degree in an accredited South African University of Technology
  • Bursaries will not be awarded towards students who are studying in either a private university or college (e.g. Boston, Damelin, etc.)

How to Apply IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) Bursary 2020-2021
Application for the IDC Bursary are conducted online. Before you begin your applications, you will need to register for an account on the Official IDC Bursary Portal. Once you have signed up for an account, you may then proceed to follow the rest of the application instructions below:

1. General Instructions

  • The applications must be submitted altogether with the necessary documents that are asked of by the committee
  • Applications will only be accepted from recognized citizens of South Africa who owns a valid Identity Document Number, currently residing in South Africa, and is eligible to study in an accredited University in South Africa or  TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training) college, and is not attached to another external bursary
  • If you are currently pursuing a degree in which you have applied the bursary for, you must make sure that you have never failed any of the subjects during your study period
  • Only full-time students studying a valid degree in an accredited South African University of Technology
  • Bursaries will not be awarded towards students who are studying in either a private university or college (e.g. Boston, Damelin, etc.)

2. What documentation should be uploaded?

  • A valid copy of your Grade 12 results slip, your current Grade 12 June results slip, your current NSC/Matric results slip, or your most recent academic transcript if you are currently not studying at the moment – tertiary students are required to put in their complete academic transcripts
  • A valid copy of your provisional letter of acceptance into the university or institution that you have been admitted into
  • A valid copy of your Identity Document
  • Applications for this bursary are only allowed for students who are pursuing a full-time degree in any recognized South African University of Technology
  • You are allowed to apply for the bursary if you are below 25 years old
  • Valid proof of household income, which may include either the following documents:
    • Valid copies of your parents’/guardians’ pay-checks
    • A valid copy of the most recent financial statements that explicitly states the withdrawn monthly salary or official affidavit if your parents/guardians are self-employed
    • A valid copy of the most recent pay-check of your guardian if you are living with your guardian even though your parents are not deceased
  • A valid copy of a death certificate/sworn affidavit if your parents/guardian/spouse is deceased
  • A valid copy of a divorce certificate if your parents are divorced
  • A valid sworn statement from any one of your parents if they are separated.

3. What is the selection criteria?

  • Priority will be provided to candidates originating from rural areas
  • Wondrous academic potential, which will be evaluated from the candidate’s June Grade 12 results slip and their Grade 11 results slip, as well as their Grade 12 prelim results (if there is one)
  • Must maintain at least a “B” average score for their key subjects in Mathematics and Science (applies towards Grade 12 students)
  • Must maintain at least a “C” average score for their subjects if they are currently studying in University or University of Technology

4. How much is the value of the bursary?

  • The bursary will directly transfer the financial assistance to the university for the awardee’s tuition expenses and on-campus accommodation
  • Coverage for prescribed study materials, paid directly towards the service provider with proper documentation of quotation
  • Awardees staying in any university-approved residence will have their financial assistance directly transferred towards the Landlord, provided they are able to obtain a lease agreement between the two parties (must be approved)
  • Allowance for daily meals (self-catering resident) will be given on a quarterly period.

Important Notes

  • Selected candidates are subject to an obligatory interview
  • Announcements of the applications will be made swiftly after their interview sessions
  • The bursary programme may also be awarded to students who are planning to obtain an obligatory post-graduate qualification as a means to receive an important professional status (e.g. B.Tech, Chartered Accountant)
  • The bursary can be renewed on a yearly basis, provided they are able to maintain their academic progress throughout their university studies
  • The payments for the bursary will be directly transferred to the university/institutions based on the rules and regulations of these said universities/establishments
  • Candidates of this bursary must be admitted to any recognized South African University, FET College, or University of Technology
  • Selected awardees are expected to take part in employment of the corporation for a number of years that is equal to the amount of years the awardees are granted the bursary with
  • The corporation does not offer experiential training for their awardees.
